How to generate a Gmail app password

Steve Bauman

Unfortunately, Google has recently stopped offering free CASA (Cloud Application Security Assessment) Tier 2 verification for applications, which is required to access Gmail accounts using OAuth2. This verification is now priced at an exorbitant $600 USD annually, making it infeasible for many smaller developers and services like Spamwise to continue supporting OAuth2 for Gmail.

As a result, the recommended method for integrating Gmail with Spamwise is now through App Passwords, which remains a secure and accessible alternative. Below are step-by-step instructions on how to generate one.

Step 1: Enable IMAP

1. Go to your Gmail settings Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab:

https://mail.google.com/mail/#settings/fwdandpop

2. In the "IMAP access" section, select Enable IMAP:

3. Click Save Changes:

Step 2: Turn on 2-Step Verification

If you don't have 2-Step Verification enabled then the next step won't work.

1. Go to your Google Account Security tab:

https://myaccount.google.com/

2. On the Signing in to Google panel, click 2-Step Verification:

3. Click Get started and follow the steps:

Step 3: Create an App Password

1. Go to your App Passwords.

https://myaccount.google.com/apppasswords

2. For "App name", Enter "Spamwise" and click Generate:

3. Copy the Generated app password (the 16-character code):

4. Paste this password in the Password field when adding your Gmail mailbox:
